A carnival-like atmosphere is on the cards this weekend in Enugu when Rangers is expected to be officially crowned champions of the Nigeria Professional Football League 2015/16 season.
Rangers, through their official twitter handle on Tuesday, announced that the Enugu State governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, has thrown the gates open for fans to go in for free to watch the Rangers Vs El-Kanemi Warriors game live at the Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium.
The club said that the gates of the stadium would be opened from 1.00pm on Sunday and would be closed once it reaches its capacity 25, 000 seats.
“The gates for the final game of the season on 2 October at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium have been declared open by H.E Gov Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi,” the first in the series of tweets from Rangers on Tuesday read.
The “awaiting champions” added: “In light of this we appeal to our endearing fans to be prompt as the gates will be open from 1pm
“Our home The Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium has a capacity for 25,000 fans, we shall close the gates at capacity crowd so please come early.
“We have pre match and post match entertainment, so come prepared for the carnival which is @RangersIntFC,” the club concluded.
Rangers muscled out a 2-1 win over Ikorodu United at the M.K.O Abiola Satdium on Sunday, to have one hand on the NPFL title.
The Flying Antelopes need just a point at home on Sunday to officially end their 32-year wait for silverware.
It will take Rangers losing at home by as much as four-goal margin, while Rivers United win away for the tables to turn round.
Fans have been told to don the white and red colours of Rangers when coming for Sunday’s game and should be in their best behaviour as they have been all through the season.
It is expected that the players will have a honorary lap of honour to express their sincerest gratitude to the fans for all the support through the season

The Director General of the Voice of Nigeria, Osita Okechukwu, has said the actualisation of the Republic of Biafra is no longer feasible.
He therefore requested ethnic Igbos to call the agitators to order, do a rethink and support President Muhammadu Buhari “in constructing a prosperous and progressive Nigeria”.
According to him, with the unwritten zoning convention for the rotation of political power in the country, the Igbo race in the South East zone would likely produce President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor in 2023.
Mr. Okechukwu spoke on Wednesday in Abuja at a colloquium organized by the Federal Capital Territory Chapter of the Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohaneze Ndigbo.
The leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, is currently facing treason charges over the group’s agitation for the actualization of the Republic of Biafra.
The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, began the agitation some years ago.
The attempt to carve out Biafra Republic in Southern Nigeria led to 30 months civil war.
Mr. Okechukwu said the greatest indication that Biafra was impossible to actualise, was the successive national conferences in the country where the five Igbo states voted against regionalism.
“If we must tell ourselves the truth, the greatest obstacle to the actualisation of Biafra, was glaringly demonstrated by successive national conferences, the Abacha Conference and Jonathan Conference, in each of the two conferences the issue of region was voted against by Enugu and Ebonyi states,” he said.
“The Jonathan Conference of 2014, for instance was made up of pro-Biafra elements whom a lot had assumed will support regionalism as a prelude to secession. Other states like Ogun, Lagos, Bayelsa, Cross River and majority of Northern States rejected regionalism. To cap it all the Jonathan Conference recommended the creation of over 50 states.”
Mr. Okechukwu said Biafra agitators must sample the opinion of the people, both at home and abroad, especially the itinerant travelers if their agitation was for collective benefit.
He said, “One is sure that most Ndigbo will call for ceasefire, especially when we are aware that the zoning convention of rotation of president between North and South offers the South East the greatest opportunity of producing Nigeria president of Igbo extraction.”
“This golden opportunity will end the issue of marginalization, will gazette the true republican nature of Ndigbo and return us to the mainstream of Nigeria.
“The doubting Thomases will doubt this projection, but it is real and anchored on the truism that in the public domain is the law with its legal teeth and the convention with its moral weight, mostly unwritten. This thesis projects that in 2023 when President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, by God’s grace completes his two term tenure, it will be the turn of the South.
“At this juncture, Ndigbo relying on equity and justice will make a good case, persuade and lobby Nigerians, in particular our South West and South-South brothers and sisters to support us, since they both had served eight and five years respectively in this 4th Republic. For no one ethnic group can win the presidency of this great country alone.”
Mr. Okechukwu said the scenario he painted showed that if it was good for Nigeria, the Igbo ethnic nationality, which he described as the second largest in population after the original indigenes of Lagos, Kano, and 23 other states of the federation, would be one of the greatest beneficiaries.
He said, “The agitation for Biafra sounds as a good music, much fun and furry as if it is the only route to Eldorado. This is false as some of us who lived in the defunct Biafra enclave can narrate.
“The question one had always posed is can Biafra be achieved via democracy or by force? Most people one had discussed with had always told me it will be achieved via peaceful means, which in other words means democracy.”
The VON DG said he recalled while on the entourage of Mr. Buhari to the World Igbo Congress (WIC) in the United States in 2004, papers were presented to the effect that the United Nations (UN) was processing the application of Ndigbo for an independent Biafra.
“This is over a decade and the germane question remains at what stage is our application? Is their records in the UN which suites our case? If there is none, the option is home-made democratic process.
“As stated earlier only very few are advocating force, and unfortunately, visible obstacles seem to taint the acclaimed democratic process.”
Predicting that the Biafra agitators would disagree with his position on the issue, Mr. Okechukwu said at 61 years of age, it would be a disservice to his ancestors, Ndigbo and Nigeria for him not to say the truth.
He said, “The agitators will vehemently disagree with me, call for my head and even query the existence of obstacles to the actualisation of Biafra under democracy or force.
“However, at 61 years on earth it will be a great disservice to our ancestors, Ndigbo and my dear countrymen, for me to swim in muddled waters and stand truth on its head, because one wants to be hailed and idolized.
“China and India with over one billion people each have shown that our large population is not a disadvantage and United States of America has shown that our diversity is not a disadvantage. What are we talking about?”

The Federal Government has again failed to produce the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, before an Abuja High-Court for trial.
Mr. Dasuki is accused of money laundering and corruption.
He was charged along with five others before Justice Peter Affen, and was granted bail. He was re-arrested and kept in custody of the State Security since December 2015.
Others being prosecuted along with the former NSA include a former Director of Finance in the Office of the NSA, Shuaibu Salisu, a former finance minister of state, Bashir Yuguda; a former Sokoto governor, Attahiru Bafarawa, the ex-governor’s son, Sagir Attahiru, and a firm, Dalhatu Investment.
At the resumed trial Thursday, counsel to the Federal Government, Rotimi Jacob, told the judge that he was surprised that Mr. Dasuki was not brought to court by his client.
Mr. Jacob said on his part he notified the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on the trial and the need to produce Mr. Dasuki in court, but said that communication gap between the EFCC and SSS was responsible for non-production of the former NSA in court.
Mr. Jacob applied to Justice Affen to stand down the case for him to enable his client to produce Mr. Dasuki in court.
He could not give a definite period within which the EFCC would bring the ex-NSA to court.
The action of the prosecution provoked reactions from Olajide Ayodele (SAN) counsel to former Minister of State for Finance, Mr. Yuguda, who opposed the request.
The senior counsel said the failure of the prosecution to give a definite time within which Mr. Dasuki would be brought to court by either EFCC or SSS was an indication that he haD no knowledge of what was transpiring between the EFCC and DSS on the matter.
Mr. Olajide therefore pleaded with the judge to adjourn the trial.
His position was adopted by Jacob Daudu, who stood for Mr. Dasuki and regretted that the government which put the ex-NSA on trial was the one scuttling the trial.
Mr. Daudu said since June when the matter was adjourned, the EFCC which initiated the trial on behalf of the Federal Government ought to have known that it its responsibility to produce Mr. Dasuki in Court as required by the law.
Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Akin Olujimi, who stood for former Sokoto Governor, Attahiru Bafarawa, also opposed the request to stand down the case without a definite time.
He pleaded for an adjournment.
In his ruling, Justice Affen agreed that it would be unfair to stand down the case without a definite time within which Mr. Dasuki would be produced in court.
The judge advised the government to ensure Mr. Dasuki is in court, and adjourned the matter till October 21, 2016.

Working in your pajamas, setting your own hours, having good coffee at your desk for a change ... there are lots of reasons people dream of leaving the normal workplace and launching out to become their own boss. The perks are great, but the work is still hard. If you're serious about being your own boss and working from home, you can definitely do it; here are the steps you need to take.

Step 1: Know Your Financial Situation

The essential first step to becoming your own boss is figuring out how you're going to write your own paycheck. You need to know - to the dollar - how much money your own business will have to make in order to keep operating and keep providing you with a livable wage. Before you start mentally decorating your new home office, sit down with your financial records and your calculator. You need to not only know your personal finances, but also the projected financial situation for your new business. How much money do you need to get started? How much money do you need to keep operating, week after week? With these numbers in hand, you'll be able to see if your business is financially viable.

Step 2: Critique Your Stability and Personal Discipline

Money isn't the only factor when it comes to being your own boss. You need to have stability in several areas of your life: Your own emotional state: Are you easily upset or panicked? Do you freak out in times of crisis? How do you respond to pressure?

Your personal support system: Do you have support from your family or close friends? Do you have at least one business-minded, trustworthy person to talk to about decisions and options?

Your time management skills: Do you overload yourself constantly? Do you meet deadlines? Can you make yourself stay organized? Being your own boss means keeping track of your own time, money and projects.

Step 3: Figure out Your Line of Work

If you're going to be your own boss, you've also got to be the employee; so what's the work going to be? Hopefully the answer is based not only on your professional skills but also your personal passions. If you can find something you love to do, you do it well, and you can make money doing it as your own boss, you've found the sweet spot. Get specific with exactly what you mean; don't just decide you'll be a business consultant. Decide what kind of consulting you'll do and who your ideal clients are.

Step 4: Start Part-Time

Unless there is an ethical or legal reason for not doing so, take several months to start being your own boss on a part-time basis. Set aside an evening or two a week and a day out of the weekend to start building up your business. Why do this instead of jump right into it? Well, the simple truth is that it takes time to build up a client base big enough and regular enough to provide you with the income you need to live on. In the first several months of building up your own business, you may find that you don't have enough work to take up all the time you now have. So start part-time, hang on to that stable income and squeeze your "extra" work in on nights and weekends. Yes, it means you will be busy. That won't change once you quit your job and go at it full-time, so this will simply help you hone those time management skills.

Step 5: Figure out the Transition

As you build up your client base, you'll start feeling the call of the home office stronger and stronger. At this point, you need to figure out how you'll transition from your office job to your be-your-own-boss job. If it's an option, talk to your boss about cutting down to half-time or part-time at your current job. You can ease that financial switch by extending your income, saving up whatever is extra and take off some of the pressure. If there's no part-time option at your job, then figure out a time frame for quitting and where you need to be in terms of clients and money at that time.

Step 6: Set up Shop

Once you've got a time frame in place, you need to get serious about becoming a legal business entity, keeping tax records and financial documents organized, and having adequate space in which to work from home. If you haven't already, look into the options for legal business structures; you can choose anything from sticking with a simple sole proprietorship to forming a CCorporation. All have different benefits, drawbacks, requirements and, of course, taxes. Get professional help if you're uncertain about any of the options, because this is one thing that needs to be done right. Along with your legal structure, you'll also want to take some of that transitional time to make sure your home office is set up for productive work. If you're having problems getting quiet time, private space or regular hours to work at home, you'll want to start figuring those problems out now and working on a solution.

Step 7: Don't Burn Your Bridges

When the time comes to say goodbye to your old job, do it graciously - even if you hated everything about it. Chances are your old work somehow relates to your new work and you'll run across some of the same people. There's no need to tell people off or leave everyone with an unprofessional memory in their minds. So be courteous in your leaving, stay in contact with the people important in your new work, and don't slam the door on your way out.

Step 8: Keep the Work Coming

The main secret to success in running your own show is to keep the work flowing in. Make it a priority to spend a regular amount of time cultivating new work even when you're already swamped. Even if you're booked solid, don't assume the work will come in automatically. Work tends to ebb and flow; if you don't hustle before the ebb, you'll be living on rice and beans until the flow comes back in. It's up to you to keep the flow going; make it a regular part of your schedule every week, and you'll find that you're actually a good boss to work for.

The Bottom Line

The beauty of being your own boss is that the more you put into it, the more you really will get out of it directly. It isn't easy forcing yourself to be organized and on top of time management - even if you are organizing in your pajamas - but it's worth it to reap the benefits of a business that is successful and profitable, and gives you the freedom to take it in the direction you find most rewarding. You may find our that the best boss you've ever worked for is you!

Incorporating these steps will help your business thrive.

Those who looted Nigeria’s treasury in the
past are behind the militants in the Niger
Delta region, says President Muhammadu
Buihari.

President Buhari said past looters of the
treasury are behind the resurgence of
militancy in the Niger Delta region, stressing
that they are the reasons the nation is
battling recession.

According to him: “Those who stole Nigeria dry
are not happy. They recruited the militants
against us in the Niger Delta, and began to
sabotage oil infrastructure. We lose millions of
barrels per day, at a time when every dollar we
can earn, counts. It is a disgrace that a
minimum of 27 states, out of 36 that we have in
Nigeria, can’t pay salaries.

In a statement by his special adviser media,
Femi Adesina, President Buhari was speaking
to top rate Nigerian professionals based in
the United States of America, whom Mrs
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Senior Special Assistant
to the President on Diaspora Matters and
International Relations, described as “15 of
the best people God ever created”.
The professionals were in New York to meet
with the Nigerian President. Top flight
aeronautics engineers, physicians, I.T
experts, a Judge, a top policewoman,
entrepreneurs, an Import Specialist at
Customs and Border Protection, professors,
two straight A students, and many others.
The parley provided President Buhari
opportunity to bring them up to speed on how
and why Nigeria got into trouble, with an
assurance that with all hands on deck,
including the best brains in the Diaspora, the
country would bounce back in the shortest
possible time.

“I am very pleased with this meeting,” President
Buhari stated. “Wherever you go in the world,
you find highly competent and outstanding
Nigerians. They not only make great impact on
their host countries and communities, their
financial remittances back home also help our
economy, particularly at a time like this, when
things are down.

“We got into trouble as a country, because we
did not save for the rainy day. For example,
between 1999 and 2015, when we produced an
average of 2.1 million barrels of oil per day, and
oil prices stood at an average of $100 per barrel,
we did not save, neither did we develop
infrastructure. Suddenly, when we came in
2015, oil prices fell to about 30 dollars per
barrel.
“I asked; where are the savings? There were
none. Where are the railways? The roads?
Power? None. I further asked; what did we do
with billions of dollars that we made over the
years? They said we bought food. Food with
billions of dollars? I did not believe, and still do
not believe.
“In most parts of Nigeria, we eat what we grow.
People in the South eat tubers, those in the
North eat grains, which they plant, and those
constitute over 60 per cent of what we eat. So,
where did the billions of dollars go? We did a lot
of damage to ourselves by not developing
infrastructure when we had the money.
“Talking of our military, they earned respect
serving in places like Burma, Zaire, Sudan,
Liberia, Sierra-Leone, and then, suddenly, that
same military could no longer secure 14 out of
774 local governments in the country.
Insurgents had seized them, calling them some
sort of caliphate, and planting their flags there;
till we came, and scattered them.
“We raised the morale of our military, changed
the leadership, re-equipped and retrained them;
USA, Britain, and some other countries helped
us, and today, the pride of our military is
restored.
“Boko Haram ran riot, killing innocent people in
churches, mosques, markets, schools, motor
parks, and so on. And they would then shout
Allahu Akbar. But if they truly knew Allah, they
would not do such evil. Neither Islam, nor any
other religion I know of, advocates hurting the
innocent. But they shed innocent blood, killed
people in their thousands. Now, we have dealt
with that insurgency, and subverted their
recruitment base.”
“But I prayed so hard for God to make me
President. I ran in 2003, 2007, 2011, and in
2015, He did. And see what I met on ground.
But I can’t complain, since I prayed for the job.
In the military, I rose from 2nd Lieutenant to
Major-General. I was military governor in 1975
over a state that is now six states. I was head
of state, got detained for three years, and
headed the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF), which
had N53 billion of that time in Nigerian banks.
“God has been very good to me, so I can’t
complain. If I feel hurt by anybody, I ask God to
help me forgive. He has done so much for me.
“After 16 years of a different party in
government, no party will come and have things
easy. It’s human. We need quality hands to run
Nigeria, and we will utilize them. I will like to
welcome you home when it’s time. But I’ll like
you to be ready.”
All the Nigerian professionals pledged to
contribute their quota towards re-launching
their fatherland to a new dawn.

Breaking: Niger Delta militants
bomb Bonny export line

RNDA accuses the EFCC of running a
campaign of calumny against Patience
Jonathan.

Militant group, the Reformed Niger Delta
Avengers (RNDA) has explained why it took
up the EFCC case against former first lady,
Patience Jonathan.

RNDA in a statement on Friday, September
23 by its spokesperson, Cynthia Whyte, said
it wadded into the matter because the anti-
graft commission was clearly running a
campaign of calumny against her.
According to Vanguard, the group recalled
that it accused certain high-profile politicians
from the Niger Delta region, including former
president Goodluck Jonathan, as sponsors or
patrons of the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA).
It said: “The controversy generated by the
revelation was yet to abate before the major
militant groups in the region, including the NDA
unanimously agreed to ceasefire and recognize
the Chief (Dr) Edwin Clark-led pan-Niger Delta
Peace and Dialogue Group as the sole body to
represent the region in the forthcoming dialogue
with the Federal Government.
“Following the development, all stakeholders
from the region were expected to close ranks
and work for the peace and development of the
region. And naturally, we changed our earlier
disposition towards the former President. ”

Youths stage protest for
Patience Jonathan in Rivers (photos)
The group said as the only Nigerian of south-
south extraction to have assumed the
position of president of Nigeria, former
president Goodluck Jonathan, is
automatically, the political leader of the entire
Niger Delta region.
RNDA said Jonathan deserves to be
respected.
Meanwhile, the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) has
attacked the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission (EFCC) over what it termed
“deliberate witch-hunt” of former President
Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Dame
Patience.
President of the IYC, Engr. Udengs Eradiri
said the commission’s indiscreet media trial
of Tompolo led to the crisis in the Niger Delta
that plunged the country into the current
economic recession.
The group said it is unacceptable and illegal
to place the former first family on media trial
without following due process. Dame
Patience, he said like most former First
Ladies made her money from gifts and
gratifications adding that there was no law
against such gestures.

 Ways Men Are Killing
Their Sperm

More and more men are finding it hard to produce
these days . It is not that they are not sweating
enough , or that they are “ unhealthy ” , but
something is wrong . Though other factors
contribute, damaged sperm is a major reason for
many a couple ’ s infertility issues .
In many cases , the man ’ s weapon may be the
reason for losing the childbearing war.
Researchers have shown that a man ’ s lifestyle
can affect the quality and quantity of his sperm,
hence fertility issues .
Anyway , here are some ways men unwittingly
cause the damage :

1.-  Leaving stress unattended to . A man who is
always stressed , maybe due to overworking , is
inadvertently killing his swimmers. Every body
function, including sperm production , is affected
by stress. Researchers found out that men with
anxiety issues tend to have abnormally shaped
sperm and sperm with mobility issues . Now , an
immobile sperm is useless because they have to
swim far to marry an egg for conception .

2 – Drinking too much. Alcohol is a big enemy of
sperm. In fact , the British Medical Journal
suggests that having as little as five drinks
(alcohol ) weekly can ‘ adversely affect ’ to Fluid
quality .

3 – Smoking too much. Blowing the smoke
always has a negative impact on sperm quality.
However , a researcher says , once a man quits ,
his system immediately starts generating
healthier sperm.

4 – Piling up extra weight . Being fit has a lot of
advantages . Being fat lowers sperm production
and can cause erectile dysfunction (ED ) or
impotence ? Losing just a little amount of weight
can help .

5 – Staying too much in hot areas. Being exposed
to too much heat regularly has dire consequences
for a man’ s sperm. A welder for example might
be at risk . A man’ s private part region needs to be
cooler than the other parts of the body , not hotter .

6 – Always carrying a phone in the front pocket .
Studies have shown that there is the radiation a
mobile phone emits so close to the scrotal area
causes as much a 9 % drop in live sperm per Fluid
sample . So it better to hold the phone or carry it in
a case or, at worse , the back pocket.
If you have hopes of getting a child in the future,
now might be a time to be conscious of your
lifestyle , instead of worrying later.
Alcohol , fat, smoking, stress and all the other
factors must be monitored .

Your Health is your Wealth.

About Potatoes

Whether mashed, baked or roasted, people often consider potatoes as comfort food. It is an important food staple and the number one vegetable crop in the world. Potatoes are available year-round as they are harvested somewhere every month of the year.

The potato belongs to the Solanaceae or nightshade family whose other members include tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, and tomatillos. They are the swollen portion of the underground stem which is called a tuber and is designed to provide food for the green leafy portion of the plant. If allowed to flower and fruit, the potato plant will bear an inedible fruit resembling a tomato.

Health Benefits

Potatoes are a very popular food source. Unfortunately, most people eat potatoes in the form of greasy French fries or potato chips, and even baked potatoes are typically loaded down with fats such as butter, sour cream, melted cheese and bacon bits. Such treatment can make even baked potatoes a potential contributor to a heart attack. But take away the extra fat and deep frying, and a baked potato is an exceptionally healthful low calorie, high fiber food that offers significant protection against cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Our food ranking system qualified potatoes as a very good source of vitamin B6 and a good source of potassium, copper, vitamin C, manganese, phosphorus, niacin, dietary fiber, and pantothenic acid.

Potatoes also contain a variety of phytonutrients that have antioxidant activity. Among these important health-promoting compounds are carotenoids, flavonoids, and caffeic acid, as well as unique tuber storage proteins, such as patatin, which exhibit activity against free radicals.
Blood-Pressure Lowering Potential

UK scientists at the Institute for Food Research have identified blood pressure-lowering compounds called kukoamines in potatoes. Previously only found in Lycium chinense, an exotic herbal plant whose bark is used to make an infusion in Chinese herbal medicine, kukoamines were found in potatoes using a new type of research called metabolomics.

Until now, when analyzing a plant's composition, scientists had to know what they were seeking and could typically look for 30 or so known compounds. Now, metabolomic techniques enable researchers to find the unexpected by analyzing the 100s or even 1000s of small molecules produced by an organism.

"Potatoes have been cultivated for thousands of years, and we thought traditional crops were pretty well understood," said IFR food scientist Dr Fred Mellon, "but this surprise finding shows that even the most familiar of foods might conceal a hoard of health-promoting chemicals." Another good reason to center your diet around the World's Healthiest Foods!

In addition to potatoes, researchers looked at tomatoes since they belong to the same plant family—Solanaceae—as Lycium chinense. Metabolomic assays also detected kukoamine compounds in tomatoes.

The IFR scientists found higher levels of kukoamines and related compounds than some of the other compounds in potatoes that have a long history of scientific investigation. However, because they were previously only noted in Lycium chinense, kukoamines have been little studied. Researchers are now determining their stability during cooking and dose response (how much of these compounds are needed to impact health).
Vitamin B6—Building Your Cells

If only for its high concentration of vitamin B6—1 medium potato contains over one-half of a milligram of this important nutrient—the potato earns high marks as a health-promoting food.

Vitamin B6 is involved in more than 100 enzymatic reactions. Enzymes are proteins that help chemical reactions take place, so vitamin B6 is active virtually everywhere in the body. Many of the building blocks of protein, amino acids, require B6 for their synthesis, as do the nucleic acids used in the creation of our DNA. Because amino and nucleic acids are such critical parts of new cell formation, vitamin B6 is essential for the formation of virtually all new cells in the body. Heme (the protein center of our red blood cells) and phospholipids (cell membrane components that enable messaging between cells) also depend on vitamin B6 for their creation.
Vitamin B6—Brain Cell and Nervous System Activity

Vitamin B6 plays numerous roles in our nervous system, many of which involve neurological (brain cell) activity. B6 is necessary for the creation of amines, a type of messaging molecule or neurotransmitter that the nervous system relies on to transmit messages from one nerve to the next. Some of the amine-derived neurotransmitters that require vitamin B6 for their production are serotonin, a lack of which is linked to depression; melatonin, the hormone needed for a good night's sleep; epinephrine and norepinephrine, hormones that help us respond to stress; and GABA, which is needed for normal brain function.
Vitamin B6—Cardiovascular Protection

Vitamin B6 plays another critically important role in methylation, a chemical process in which methyl groups are transferred from one molecule to another. Many essential chemical events in the body are made possible by methylation, for example, genes can be switched on and turned off in this way. This is particularly important in cancer prevention since one of the genes that can be switched on and off is the tumor suppressor gene, p53. Another way that methylation helps prevent cancer is by attaching methyl groups to toxic substances to make them less toxic and encourage their elimination from the body.

Methylation is also important to cardiovascular health. Methylation changes a potentially dangerous molecule called homocysteine into other, benign substances. Since homocysteine can directly damage blood vessel walls greatly increasing the progression of atherosclerosis, high homocysteine levels are associated with a significantly increased risk for heart attack and stroke. Eating foods rich in vitamin B6 can help keep homocysteine levels low. In addition, diets high in vitamin B6-rich foods are associated with overall lower rates of heart disease, even when homocysteine levels are normal, most likely because of all the other beneficial activities of this energetic B vitamin.

A single baked potato will also provide you with over 3 grams of fiber, but remember the fiber in potatoes is mostly in their skin. If you want the cholesterol-lowering, colon cancer preventing, and bowel supportive effects of fiber, be sure to eat the potato's flavorful skin as well as its creamy center.
Vitamin B6—Athletic Performance

Vitamin B6 is also necessary for the breakdown of glycogen, the form in which sugar is stored in our muscle cells and liver, so this vitamin is a key player in athletic performance and endurance.
Description

Whether it is mashed, baked or made into French fries, many people often think of the potato as a comfort food. This sentiment probably inspired the potato's scientific name, Solanum tuberosum, since solanum is derived from a Latin word meaning "soothing". The potato's name also reflects that it belongs to the Solanaceae family whose other members include tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, and tomatillos.

There are about about 100 varieties of edible potatoes. They range in size, shape, color, starch content and flavor. They are often classified as either mature potatoes (the large potatoes that we are generally familiar with) and new potatoes (those that are harvested before maturity and are of a much smaller size). Some of the popular varieties of mature potatoes include the Russet Burbank, the White Rose and the Katahdin, while the Red LeSoda and Red Pontiac are two types of new potatoes. There are also delicate fingerling varieties available which, as their name suggests, are finger-shaped.

The skin of potatoes is generally brown, red or yellow, and may be smooth or rough, while the flesh is yellow or white. There are also other varieties available that feature purple-grey skin and a beautiful deep violet flesh.

As potatoes have a neutral starchy flavor, they serve as a good complement to many meals. Their texture varies slightly depending upon their preparation, but it can be generally described as rich and creamy.
History

Potatoes originated in the Andean mountain region of South America. Researchers estimate that potatoes have been cultivated by the Indians living in these areas for between 4,000 and 7,000 years. Unlike many other foods, potatoes were able to be grown at the high altitudes typical of this area and therefore became a staple food for these hardy people.

Potatoes were brought to Europe by Spanish explorers who "discovered" them in South America in the early 16th century. Since potatoes are good sources of vitamin C, they were subsequently used on Spanish ships to prevent scurvy. They were introduced into Europe via Spain, and while they were consumed by some people in Italy and Germany, they were not widely consumed throughout Europe, even though many governments actively promoted this nutritious foodstuff that was relatively inexpensive to produce. The reason for this is that since people knew that the potato is related to the nightshade family, many felt that it was poisonous like some other members of this family. In addition, many judged potatoes with suspicion since they were not mentioned in the Bible. In fact, potatoes initially had such a poor reputation in Europe that many people thought eating them would cause leprosy.

Some of the credit for the rise in potatoes' popularity is given to two individuals who creatively engineered plans to create demand for the potato. In the 18th century, a French agronomist named Parmentier created a scheme whereby peasants could "steal" potatoes from the King's "guarded" gardens. He also developed and popularized the mashed potato that became popular probably because he made this suspicious vegetable unrecognizable. Another person who was instrumental to the acceptance of potatoes was Count Rumford. A member of the British scientific group, the Royal Society, Rumford created a mush soup made of potatoes, barley, peas and vinegar, which the German peasants adopted as a satisfying and inexpensive dish.

It is thought that the potato was first brought to the United States in the early 18th century by Irish immigrants who settled in New England. People in this country were slow to adopt the "Irish potato" and large scale cultivation of potatoes did not occur in the U.S. until the 19th century.

There are not that many foods that can claim that a pivotal historical event centered around them. But the potato can. By the early 19th century, potatoes were being grown extensively throughout Northern Europe, and potatoes were almost solely relied upon as a foodstuff in Ireland owing to this vegetable's inexpensive production and the poor economy of this country. Yet, in 1845 and 1846, a blight ruined most of the potato crop in Ireland and caused major devastation: this event is known as the Irish Potato Famine. Almost three-quarters of a million people died, and hundreds of thousands emigrated to other countries, including the United States, in search of sustenance.

Today, this once-infamous vegetable is one of the most popular throughout the world and the one that Americans consume more of pound for pound than any other. Currently, the main producers of potatoes include the Russian Federation, Poland, India, China and the United States.
How to Select and Store

While potatoes are often conveniently packaged in a plastic bag, it is usually better to buy them individually from a bulk display. Not only will this allow you to better inspect the potatoes for signs of decay or damage, but many times, the plastic bags are not perforated and cause a build up of moisture that can negatively affect the potatoes.

Potatoes should be firm, well shaped and relatively smooth, and should be free of decay that often manifests as wet or dry rot. In addition, they should not be sprouting or have green coloration since this indicates that they may contain the toxic alkaloid solanine that has been found to not only impart an undesirable taste, but can also cause a host of different health conditions such as circulatory and respiratory depression, headaches and diarrhea.

Sometimes stores will offer already cleaned potatoes. These should be avoided since when their protective coating is removed by washing, potatoes are more vulnerable to bacteria. In addition, already cleaned potatoes are also more expensive, and since you will have to wash them again before cooking, you will be paying an unnecessary additional cost.

Since new potatoes are harvested before they are fully mature, they are much more susceptible to damage. Be especially careful when purchasing these to buy ones that are free from discoloration and injury.

The ideal way to store potatoes is in a dark, dry place between 45F to 50F (between 7-10C) as higher temperatures, even room temperature, will cause the potatoes to sprout and dehydrate prematurely. While most people do not have root cellars that provide this type of environment, to maximize the potato's quality and storage, you should aim to find a place as close as possible to these conditions. Storing them in a cool, dark closet or basement may be suitable alternatives. Potatoes should definitely not be exposed to sunlight as this can cause the development of the toxic alkaloid solanine to form.

Potatoes should not be stored in the refrigerator, as their starch content will turn to sugar giving them an undesirable taste. In addition, do not store potatoes near onions, as the gases that they each emit will cause the degradation of one another. Wherever you store them, they should be kept in a burlap or paper bag.

Mature potatoes stored properly can keep up to two months. Check on the potatoes frequently, removing any that have sprouted or shriveled as spoiled ones can quickly affect the quality of the others. New potatoes are much more perishable and will only keep for one week.

Cooked potatoes will keep fresh in the refrigerator for several days. Potatoes do not freeze well.
Tips for Preparing and Cooking
Tips for Preparing Potatoes

The potato skin is a concentrated source of dietary fiber, so to get the most nutritional value from this vegetable, don't peel it and consume both the flesh and the skin. Just scrub the potato under cold running water right before cooking and then remove any deep eyes or bruises with a paring knife. If you must peel it, do so carefully with a vegetable peeler, only removing a thin layer of the skin and therefore retaining the nutrients that lie just below the skin.

Potatoes should be cleaned and cut right before cooking in order to avoid the discoloration that occurs with exposure to air. If you cannot cook them immediately after cutting, place them in a bowl of cold water to which you have added a little bit of lemon juice, as this will prevent their flesh from darkening and will also help to maintain their shape during cooking. As potatoes are also sensitive to certain metals that may cause them to discolor, avoid cooking them in iron or aluminum pots or using a carbon steel knife to cut them.

Individual Concerns
Potatoes and Pesticide Residues

Virtually all municipal drinking water in the United States contains pesticide residues, and with the exception of organic foods, so do the majority of foods in the U.S. food supply. Even though pesticides are present in food at very small trace levels, their negative impact on health is well documented. The liver's ability to process other toxins, the cells' ability to produce energy, and the nerves' ability to send messages can all be compromised by pesticide exposure. According to the Environmental Working Group's 2014 report "Shopper's Guide to Pesticides," conventionally grown potatoes are among the top 12 fruits and vegetables on which pesticide residues have been most frequently found. Therefore, individuals wanting to avoid pesticide-associated health risks may want to avoid consumption of potatoes unless they are grown organically.
Potatoes Belong to the Nightshade Family
Potatoes are one of the vegetables that belong to the nightshade (Solanaceae) family. For helpful information about nightshade vegetables—including our WHFoods Recommendations—please see our article, Which foods are classified as "nightshades," and is it true that foods from this group can potentially contain problematic substances?
Processed Potato Products and Acrylamides

Regularly cooked potatoes are not a concern when it comes to acrylamide, a potentially toxic and potentially cancer-causing substance. Yet, fried, processed foods made with potatoes—such as potato chips and french fries—are considered among the highest risk of foods when it comes to acrylamide exposure. This is yet another reason to avoid or minimize your intake of these foods. For more on acrylamides, see our detailed write-up on the subject.
